Often a door on an older building will have excessively odd hardware, as in this case.
Top pictured is the prep or footprint left behind from what is known as a clamshell lock.
I dare you to find a new clam shell lock. I'd be interested to find your source.
Anyway, the lock was beyond repair and needed to be replaced.
Second picture from top you'll see the rough fill in.
Note the uneven nature of the worn metal and the simulated distress on the fill plate.
The mounting surface has been left flat for performance purposes.
The third picture displays a perfectly mounted D-series knob lock.
The fourth proudly displays the re-established edge on the door.
All around efforts were taken to preserve and recreate a worn and permanent look and feel.
As time passes, more natural wear further marries the original with the alteration.
Projects like these are treated as the works of art that they are.
